Koh Phangan offers more than just pristine beaches. Deep within the island’s jungle lies a place of immense historical significance and natural beauty: Than Sadet Waterfall.
Known as the “Royal Stream,” this waterfall is the most famous on the island, not just for its size, but for its unique connection to the Thai Monarchy.
A Waterfall Fit for Kings
“Than Sadet” literally translates to “Royal Visit.” The waterfall was named by King Rama V (King Chulalongkorn), who loved this spot so much that he visited it 14 times during his reign (1888–1909).
Visitors today can still see the Royal Inscriptions carved into the large granite boulders near the waterfall. These monograms belong to King Rama V, as well as King Rama VII and King Rama IX, making this site a sacred part of Thai history.
What to Expect
Located within the Than Sadet – Ko Pha-ngan National Park, the waterfall stretches over 2.5 kilometers.
- Freshwater Pools: The stream cascades down through lush jungle, creating multiple pools perfect for a refreshing dip on a hot day.
- Jungle Trekking: There is a scenic nature trail (approx. 1.5 km) that follows the stream. It’s a moderate hike that immerses you in the tropical rainforest.
- Beach Connection: The waterfall flows directly into the ocean at Than Sadet Beach, a quiet and secluded bay ideal for relaxing after your hike.
Travel Tips
- Getting There: It is accessible by car or scooter from Thong Sala Pier. The road is scenic but can be steep and winding, so drive carefully.
- What to Bring: Wear sturdy shoes for walking on rocks, bring mosquito repellent, and don’t forget your swimsuit!
- Best Time to Visit: The waterfall flows year-round, but it is most impressive after the rainy season (November – January).
